Self-Care: Making Wellness a Priority

With all the daily pressures of work and home life, it’s easy to put your own needs on the backburner. Before you know it, weeks turn into years of ignoring your mental and physical wellness with devastating results. The long-term effects of poor diet, elevated stress levels and excessive worry lead to serious conditions like obesity and high blood pressure while increasing your risk of heart disease and stroke.

To pave the way for long-term health and vitality, start prioritizing your own wellbeing by taking immediate steps to improve your lifestyle, attitude, and physical wellbeing.

Where to begin?

Start by eliminating excuses and procrastination. Make the decision to change your life, starting now. Recognize that these are not simply one-time choices. Increased wellness involves making repeated decisions to adopt new healthy habits and leave old patterns behind. Don’t beat yourself up if you slip up occasionally. Prioritizing your wellness gets easier over time as you adjust to new lifestyle changes and learn more about the benefits of improved personal choices. Conduct research online or visit a wellness retreat to learn basics that you can implement right away.

Slow down and examine your priorities

We’re in the instant gratification age and it’s easy to become preoccupied with “what’s next?” rather than what’s happening right now. Evaluate how your time and attention are spent on a daily, weekly and annual basis. What are your objectives? Where do you see yourself in a year? Ten years?

When you outline your priorities and objectives, you take an important first step in making them a reality. Remove yourself from your daily grind by visiting a weight loss retreat where workshops, lectures, and activities are designed to help you strip away what’s unimportant in your life and replace it with what matters most.

Spend more time doing things you love

Make time for both relaxing and inspiring activities that keep you grounded. This includes resurrecting hobbies that might have fallen by the wayside, travel to new or favorite places, and exploring new interests that you might have been putting off. Set aside time to do these activities alone or with friends and family. Make this personal time non-negotiable. If you don’t prioritize your own happiness, who will?

Embrace mediation

Studies have shown that mind-quieting meditation is associated with reduced stress levels as well as sleeping better, achieving greater relaxation, lowering blood pressure, increased ability to handle stressful situations and clearer and more effective decision-making. Learning to meditate is not difficult. Practicing it regularly is a different story. When beginning a meditation practice, start with just a few minutes a day. Work your way up to deeper meditation for longer stretches as you progress.

Improve your diet

Eating better helps you feel better. A healthy diet provides your body with more effective fuel which assists you in sleeping better and increases your energy level. You don’t have to radically change your diet to gain immediate wellness benefits. Start small. Choose organic foods when you shop. Replace dairy with healthy alternatives like almond butter. Incorporate “meatless Mondays” (or any other day of the week) onto your menu by replacing a meaty meal with a plant-based meal.

By making your wellness a priority, you are paving the way for a healthier future. You don’t have to go it alone. Work with experts and meet like-minded people by visiting a weight loss spa or wellness retreat. Or form your own at-home wellness group to share information and encouragement as you shift your focus toward being the best possible version of yourself.
